From a young age, Natsume has been able to see ghosts, Yokai, and more importantly they can see him. Bullied and lonely, Natsume eventually inherits his grandmother's "Book of Friends", a collection of Yokai names that she won in battle against the monsters. A prized possession for many Yokai, Natsume quickly finds himself under the eye of a cat demon, who promises to act as his bodyguard in return for the book itself.
